Merry Christmas! It's been a busy time for us as I'm sure it has been for all of you. We all met at Korey's house for Thanksgiving this year. We had 8 adults and 7 children-6 and under. It was so much fun to be together. It reminded me of when we all met at Mom's with all our kids when they were little. That was before Janet had kids, and we still had 8 adults and 7 or 8 kids! We had Christmas with Kayci and Keith's families as well. We plan to go back to Korey and Amy's for Christmas. Mom and Dad are going too. It should be a little calmer this time. Praise God for healthy, active. loving families! We are so blessed! Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas! Love, karen

I say...Thanks to God from whom all blessings continue to flow...Patriece, I have been praying for your healing and trusting.......didn't realize I hadn't seen the blog for over a month....checked in this morning......Bless your heart!
From the beginning I didn't know any words in prayer for you because I knew you were in His will and that He was caring for you better than we could think to ask, so I just kept lifting you up.
I'm sure your sweet mother and daddy feel more blessed than any of us in your good news.

I saw Daddy last weekend, he is much better. He and Poncho had a good day at the ranch, he looks so much better.

Thanks to you who keep up with the blog....for Christmas I would like Monte to participate!!!
And I mean it.....you too, Suzi.

Update from Patriece

Here's an update from Patriece that she wrote to us this morning and said we could share:

I went to Dr. Block (medical, not naturapathic) in Tulsa yesterday. He was very pleased with how well I am doing. To have decreased my pain meds, to look good, and to be in almost no pain is miraculous and certainly not the norm. He praised the Lord, and so did we!! My chest x-rays showed improvement also and he said, "I believe the Lord is healing you." That is awesome to hear a doctor say that. He is working to adjust my supplements when he gets the blood report back. He also adjusted the hormone cream. :) The older chiropractor who was instrumental in getting my CT scan and was the first person to give me that particular report thought it was reasonable to think that I would not be around by this time of the year (3 months). Needless to say, last evening I went on a praise walk north of the house, but I find that words or "a million angels cannot express my gratitude" to Jesus. The doc said he was praying and knew others were, too. I said "yes!" That would be YOU!----Thanks for your prayers!!!--We all know this is "OUR God in whom we trust", doing this! It was nice (very unusual) when a doctor recognized that fact also.
Pray for Olivia (Trevor's 13-month-old). She has the swine flu. Diagnosed yesterday.

We are rejoicing in this encouraging news and trusting God completely!

Praise for Recovery

Daddy is doing well and finally getting back to normal. His energey level isn't back to normal, but we are confident it will. He has been blessed to hear from a lot of family and dear friends during the past two months.

Courtney's daughter, Frankie Jane (4), spent a couple of nights in the hospital with a high fever. It was scary at first. They determined she had a bacterial respiratory infection. She was able to
go home today.

We are very thankful for answered prayers.

Dad leaving the hospital

Dad gets to leave the hospital today. He has been there since September 29. We are so glad he received the needed help. He was dehydrated, anemic (due to bleeding ulcers), and had a urinary infection. He would have gone home sooner, but he had a reaction to antibiotic. The doctor feels good about his condition and he is supposed to see the primary physician next week.

Praise God he is on the road to feeling better. Thanks for all your prayers.

Here is an update about Patriece. She has suffered quite a bit the last 2-3 weeks. She has been to the MD, and he upped her pain medication dosage from 7 to 10 (Lortab). This is a substantial pain medication. She can walk outside, etc., but has to lay down quite a bit when the pain is significant. I think she had a couple of "better" days this week. As you may know, it seems the cancer has spread to her lungs, collar bone, and breast bone. She suffers from "effusion" which is like pleurisy around the lungs. This can be quite painful. Some people have the liquid drained, but sometimes it goes away on its own. Evidentally, hers went away for a period of time because she felt so much better for a few weeks. It's a roller coaster.

She continues to eat well and get good nourishment along with her holistic, natural program. The pulmonary specialist advised to do nothing "invasive" at the time he saw her some weeks ago. Thanks for all your prayers for her small body's relief. You're all a great support!

Gail's New Grandson

Gail's daughter Katy delivered a baby boy yesterday. His name is Coulter Allen Taylor. He gave them a scare when he was born with the cord around his neck. He was quickly bagged and soon very alert. They are praising God for this blessing. I'm sure Gail will be posting pictures soon.

Dad's surgery

For those who didn't know, Dad had knee replacement surgery Monday. His doctor says the surgery went really well, and his knee should be great. They moved him to the rehab hospital so he can receive more supervised Physical Therapy. He could be released Tuesday or Wednesday. He is in good health and healing well. Poncho, Gail and Janet were here for the surgery. Janet stayed until yesterday, and Kelley and I came last night. We will stay until Monday afternoon and go home. Poncho may come up until Dad gets home. He is doing well, but we want someone to be with him at night, and Mom can't do it all. She has come down with a cold. Kelley and I were in Memphis with Kayci for a week after Noah was born. We got home last Sunday afternoon. I missed the first week of school for the first time in 25 years, but it was worth it! I have been playing catch-up all week long. Kelley is painting. We left for Amarillo right after school Friday. Thanks for all the prayers for Dad and Mom during the surgery and now the recovery. It's a big surgery, and it's going to be a gradual recovery. Pray for patience, guidance, and healing during this time. More later. Karen

Love to hear everybody's news!

Great to hear about Joe's wedding. My folks were here in the Springs on his 82nd birthday (Aug. 16). It was great to celebrate here. They're in Rocky Ford now.

Update on Patriece: She is feeling much better. Getting more rest. Sleeping at night. Not coughing. Not having to take as much pain medication. She's in high spirits. God is so near! All praises to God! Keep praying---thanks!

Wedding in Amarillo

Joe and Sarah's wedding was great! Frankie Jane and Collin kept us entertained during the ceremony. Neither one could stand still. Frankie was talking to herself and Collin was trying to stand on his head while swinging the ring pillow. Joe and Sarah were still the main focus. We had a great time at the dinner. White tables, with tablecloths and candles were in a beautiful courtyard of mexican style shops. The buffet was mexcian food. The bride's cake was strawberry and the groom's chocolate. Joe's table had bubble gum cigars for the kids. The little ones had huge wads of bubble gum inside their cheeks. It was difficult to understand anything they said. It was a hit. My James blew the largest bubble, which I captured on my digital camera. The bride and groom had the first dance, followed by the bride and her father. Very sweet! It was a great time of music, dancing and visiting with family. We enjoyed being around Jane and her new husband, Jason (alias, Pampa). Love was definitely in the air. I loved getting pictures of my great neices and nephews. They grow so quickly. I can't wait to meet the Katy and Kayci's new ones when they bless this world with their arrival. I hope to post a few pictures in a few days. God's blessings on everyone.
Love,
Janet

I'm trying to get everythiing ready so I can leave it in good working order when I get the call. This is grandchild #7--Noah James Ross. I'll post a picture as soon as I get one. Hope everyone has had a good summer. I would love to read about some of your fun times. Love, Karen

Home Again

We just got home after spending 10 days in Colorado. We spent a few days with Richard and Janet while Kelley and Richard had some "projects" to do. They made a wok out of a plow disc for us to use with our camp stove. They also fixed our hitch for the back of our camper so we could carry our generator with us to camp. We camped at Marshall Pass for 5 days. Rod and Bonita joined us for4 days. We had a wonderful time exploring the mountains on 4 wheelers, visiting, playing games and eating the best food anywhere. Bonita has pictures of our family group up there. (Rod, Bonita, Richard, Janet, Deb, Jake, Laney, Brandon, Tripp, Kelley and I) Maybe she'll post them soon. We spent another 3 days in Rocky Ford while Kelley and Richard made a top for the wok, and Kelley used his new sprayer to paint Richard's feeders and other farm equipment. It looks almost new in John Deere Green. Janet and I got a lot of visiting done, and we all played Mexican Train almost every night. Janet, Kelley and I played until late most nights. This trip is the highlight of our summer vacations. We really appreciate Richard and Janet introducing us to the camping experience. We always have such a wonderful time. It's good to be home again. We have Keith's family coming Saturday, and they will be here 2 weeks. We will take them camping in New Mexico for a few days, too. Hope you all are having a relaxing and funfilled summer, too. Love, Karen

Melba's brother, Jake

Paula, I'm so glad you all had a good time and patriece was well enough to come. I just wanted everyone to know that Mom's brother, Jake, died today around noon. He would have been 82 Wednesday. He has been fighting lung cancer. We are leaving with Mom and Dad tomorrow for Bryan, Tx. They plan to bury him here in Lubbock after they have services in Bryan. I know Mom will appreciate all your prayers for her family. You're right. God is good----all the time! Love, Karen
Karen and all,
Thanks for all the summer news! We had our grandson Dylan here in the Springs the first weekend of June. It was great. We did a lot of fun things like the zoo, a ballgame, bumper cars, etc. Then we had visitors from Indianapolis. We did the Airforce Academy, Garden of the Gods, and mexican food. Then, we had our family gathering in Door County, Wisconsin. Thankfully, Patriece was able to be there. About one week before, we weren't sure. She still has some issues, and we hope to hear something soon from X-rays or an MRI. Our reunion with just our husbands and immediate family was memorable and something we'll cherish for years to come!
Lots of wonderful devotional times, singing together, shopping, eating, etc.

Nona and Kevin plan to come here for a long July 4 weekend. It'll be fun to have them. We plan to go to Indy to see the grandkids again at the end of July. Then my folks plan to come here around mid-August.

Dave starts his PhD at University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) in August. And, I start teaching in September for the same Bible College that employs Dave. I'll be teaching Basic English Skills--a remedial course---only as an adjunct one evening a week for 13 weeks. I'm real happy to be teaching again! Of course, we'll continue the ESL classes through the church in the Fall, too.

God is good---All the time!

Paula

Summer and Family

Kelley and I have been to see Korey and Amy in Keller. Their house is almost finished. Kayci came by on her way to see Josh's parents so we got to see her and Truitt for a few hours. We are home for a week, and then we are off in our 5th wheeler to see Richard and Janet on Monday. Wednesday we are all headed for Marshall Pass to camp for about a week. I think Bonita and Rod are going, too. July 11th Keith's family, Martha and the kids, will come to see us in Lubbock. Keith will be on Wilderness Trek by Salida with his youth group. July 19th, we'll meet Keith in Amarillo, and we plan to take them all camping in New Mexico sometime that week. They will leave the 24th, and then I am going to several workshops for school the next 2 weeks. During that time I will be getting my room ready for next year. Sometime the end of August we will be traveling to Memphis, Tn. to meet our newest grandson. Kayci is due August 26th-Mom's birthday. I have to get everything ready for the start of school because I may not be there. In the meantime, Kelley has been painting some for Korey at his new house. He also has several painting jobs around here to do when we are in town. Right now he is getting the 5th wheeler all ready for our big summer outing. We've been camping with Richard's group off and on since our kids were really small. It's our favorite camping trip! We are so glad Richard is feeling better this year and can make the trip. Today is Dad's 79th birthday. Next Monday is their 59th anniversary. Kelley and I will celebrate our 39th July 25th. Gail is getting ready for Joe's wedding August 15th in Amarillo, and Janet and family are in Hawaii for a family vacation. Hope you are all doing well. I would love to hear from any or all of you. Love, Karen

Paula

Paula, I told you I would find out about Josh's talk at Pepperdine. Kayci sent me this link to get a CD, DVD, or MP3. I guess you can't just listen on line. I'm ordering the DVD. I would be glad to share it when I see you again. Sorry. ACU has a place you can download the talk.

Rogers' happenings

Kayci got here Thursday afternoon. She was the speaker for our annual Ladies Retreat this weekend. The theme was "The Overflow of the Heart" She did an amazing job. I know I am a bit biased, but everyone there loved the experience. Josh will come tomorrow. We'll have Truitt's 2nd birthday party tomorrow afternoon. We've invited some of Kayci's old friend and their kids for cake and ice cream. They will fly out Tuesday morning for Pepperdine. Kayci teaches her class Wednesday morning at 9:45. Josh speaks Friday morning. (Paula, I am not sure if you can hear it online. The ACU lectureship was available, but I couldn't find it at Pepperdine. I'll find out and let you know.) They'll be back Saturday for Mother's Day then leave for Decatur and Josh's parents. We are going to Courtney's graduation celebration May 15. School is winding down if we can just keep from overreacting to the Swine Flu. There have been not any confirmed cases here. Hope to hear from you all soon. Karen

Nix happenings

I've enjoyed reading the recent posts. I have baby birds on my back porch. I have a bird house James painted in scouts hanging under the eaves. I have to fuss at the blue jays when the try to bother them. I also am blessed to have hummingbirds that I can watch from my kitchen window.

Karen's birthday was May 2 and James (my youngest) birthday is May 3. He is being baptized on his birthday tomorrow. We are excited about his decision to commit himself to Christ.

We are trying not to over react to the Swine Flu. The media doesn't help calm the nerves. There were six cases reported in a nearby community. The city is waiting on 8 more cases to be tested. Our schools have cancelled all concerts and banquets. I'm dissappointed for these kids that have worked so hard for these events. I'm sure ya'll are having similiar problems.

We are in the midst of planning a family vacation to Hawaii in June. I'm making all the arrangements to save money. We wanted to have a big trip before Emily's senior year.

Enjoy hearing from ya'll.....Janet

Some news from Paula:

Hope you are all staying well during this flu epidemic.

1) I have a house finch nesting (with little eggs) on my front door. I had a basket with silk flowers hanging on the door, and the little finch just made herself at home. We'll see if the eggs hatch. Dave has been building a new front porch railing on the front of the house, so the mommy bird doesn't like to come around when he's out front.

2) I got to see and hear a holocaust survivor last night at a local church here. It was very interesting. His name is David Faber. He has written a book that is now required reading in some public middle & high schools. He's about 81 or 82. There were 400-500 people there, and you should have heard how quiet that crowd was during much of his talk. He just stood up in front of his picture exhibit and talked----had no films or powerpoint electronic stuff like people are so used to now. He raised up his sleeve to show his tatoo numbers on his arm which were excruciatingly painfully inscribed by a nail dipped in ink. After the liberation (18 yrs. old and about 70 lbs.), he was able to learn baking skills in Switzerland and Paris, France. He eventually ended up as a chef for the House of Commons in London, and one day he heard a loud voice behind him. It was Winston Churchill. Mr. Churchill asked him if he ever burned anything (souffles, etc.). Anyway, Mr. Churchill liked his baking I guess and wanted him to stay. It was quite interesting, and I can now say I have actually seen a live survivor and his tatoo. As you know, for many years, I've been fascinated by the holocaust. May we never forget!

3) Our little second grandson, Eli, will have tubes put in his ears on May 12. He has some fluid behind the ear drums. I hope it makes a better boy out of him!!! Whew! Ha! He's kind of like already in the terrible twos, and he's only 1 !

Gail: Congratulations on all the graduations (Courtney), new grandchild, a wedding, everything! Sounds like a busy summer for you!

Karen: Is your son-in-law's keynote speech at Pepperdine on the web somewhere???? I'd like to hear him speak.

Love to you all----Paula
We've been to Ohio & back for a funeral this past week. Kevin's first wife's (who died of cancer) father died. We have stayed very close to the family and they have been amazingly gracious to accept me into the family. It was another celebration of a life well lived.
The other day I finally cleaned out the drawer of the china cabinet that came from Ma's house. It was fun to find all the odds & ends of strings, yarn, wrapping paper, batteries, etc. There was a pyrex bowl full of melted candle wax that she must have thought she would make another candle out of some day. I decided to get rid of the wax so I could save the bowl and use it. The funniest thing I found was a partially used roll of masking tape. She was the masking tape queen! I remember anything she sent home with us would be wrapped up and covered in masking tape. Two things she never ran out of--masking tape and Absorbine Jr.! Memories :)

I haven't heard any news on Millie..I do know that Bonita is on a retreat so won't be answering right away. All kinds of new here...new graduated school teacher (Courtney) May 16th, new daughter Aug. 15th (My baby Joe is getting married) and New baby boy coming to Katy, Andy, Calvin, and Collin in Sept. Wow...see what you get when you have 5 kids?
How is Patrice?
Sure do miss calling Ma.

Where is everyone?

Only 30 more days of school! Things are getting crazier by the day around here. The end of school os SO busy--especially for excited 6 year olds! We have been camping 3 times since Feb. 19. We traded campers the end of Feb. and we've used it twice. We went to Kara's wedding in Canyon. It was beautiful, and Deb did a wonderful job planning from a distance. Kara was a beautiful bride, and Lani and Renee were good bridemaids. Grandma and Grandpa Burr had a great time, too. It was so good to see everyone again. Our kids are doing well. Kayci is having a baby boy in late August. This will make 7 grandkids- 4 boys and 3 girls. We just love keeping up with them all. Hope to hear from you all soon. I'll post some pictures when I have more time. Love, Karen

Thought you would all want to know that Millie Clawson is not well...she fell and hit her head...has some other symptoms and now pneumonia. I'm having some resurging of emotions. Her daughter Becky, my classmate and friend, called Tuesday to visit because we hadn't connected since Mom's passing. She said Millie had a wonderful birthday the week of March 12, and joyfully said that it's OK if that's the last birthday. Becky said she's tired...she lost her twin sister last winter...and then she lost her Nellie...she's ready to go. My last visit with Millie before the end, Millie hugged me and said she thought she got as much out of my visits there as Mom did. I called her my unofficial "Godmother". Please pray for the family, we understand what they are going through. Love you all, Aunt Bonty

On a humorous note about funerals...when Millie walked in to her twin sisters service they could hear people gasping because she was identical to the person lying in the casket!

Paula, Sounds like you're in for some fun! You might start practicing up to increase your stamina! Congratulatons. There's just nothing sweeter than a new baby. We have enjoyed our 3 Alabama grandchildren this week. We are flying to Dallas Saturday and then I'll fly home Sunday morning. It's definitely Spring here in Alabama. The trees are loaded with blossoms and the azalea bushes are just full of flowers. It is amazing what going South and a lot of rain can do. So glad to hear about Patriece's improvement. Keep us posted. Karen
John David Currey was born 18 March in Danville, Indiana. His mother is Dave's daughter Rachel. See my post in "Comments" under Bonita's blog for more about this. Also, thanks to everyone for prayers for Patriece!!! She has had substantial relief from the intense pain. Although the pain is not completely gone, she is able to function and have much better days. A great answer to prayer!

Our son, Keith, and his wife, Martha, are gone to Cuernavaca, Mx for a Mission trip with his youth group so Kelley and I are playing with their 3 children- Reese,5, Anna Wren,3, and Claire, 18 months. We are very BUSY, but we sure are having fun! It's been a long time since we had 3 little kids around the house. Anyone else have big plans? Karen

If you haven't met Kent Dunnington, Paula's son, here he is visiting Ma the first part of January.

This is Miranda & Monica Kitts...Monte's estranged daughters...our granddaughters. They visited Ma the first week in January and she gave them words of wisdom.

And these girls...in a far away place, a long, long time ago!
Some things never change, this is not one of them.

Bonita is becoming a pro!

Thanks for the pictures, Bonita. You have graduated from posting class.

I'm sad to hear Patriece is not feeling well. We will be in prayer. Keep us all
posted.

Love to all.....Janet

Cousins at Grandma Myrtle Burr's funeral Feb or March 1954. Daddy didn't think I was old enough to go. (Billy standing up high...Melba 3rd from left front. Richard behind Yevonne 3rd from right. Must have been cold and of course the wind was blowing...)
All Burr siblings after their Mother's funeral

Alvoree and his mother, Myrtle...in front of the house on the original homestead...it was added to several times. About a half mile east of the house where I was born. I know that I have a picture that shows more of the house somewhere.

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Here's a picture of the house where Bonita was born many, many long years ago!!! ha ha

This was the house they left when they moved to Rocky Ford. Before this, Ma,Pa, Billy, Richard, and Velva lived in the dugout house which weathered the dust storms and which was behind where this white house is now. This is about a mile from the Banner Cemetery.

If anyone has a picture of the farmhouse where Pa grew up near here, I'd like to see it. I understand it's still standing and in good shape, but I didn't get to see it while there.

Love to all,

Paula

Toasting in the New Year

Kelley and I went with Mom and Dad to see Ma Dec. 30. On New Years Eve, we brought her some sparkling juice and we toasted in 2009. Thought you might like to see a picture of us celebrating. She sure liked a party! Karen

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

I agree with James. Finish the painting, Janet. You'll love it. Karen

Monday, February 16, 2009

Janet and I are blogging at the same time...too cool. Karen that book was..I dared to call Him Father. A muslim woman who found God. Paula and Ma and Velva and Bonita and Millie etc had already read it.
I'm reminded of Ma when I paint, quilt or sew. Gail and I are walking the road together on this blog. I have an unfinished painting of hers sitting next to her brushes. I walk by it every day. I haven't decided whether to leave it unfinished or make it a joint effort.

Here's a picture of Ma with her reading glasses on. Bonita took this picture on the last day that I saw her in January. I love her smile in this one. You can double click on the center of the picture and it will go to full screen size.
It's wonderful Ma could read so well. What a blessing. I think the book "The Shack" was Bonita's. It wasn't mine, so whoever has it and passes it around can get it back to Bonita eventually.

I think of Ma when I knit. I am not nearly as prolific yet as Ma was with her knitting, but I guess I'm a bona fide grandma now because I'm knitting for the grandkids and "whoever else" it might be for. Knitting reminds me of Ma, so that's a neat connection.

What reminds you of Ma? Let's hear from y'all.

Love,

Paula

Truly Blessed

I've been thinking a lot about how blessed we are to have such a "normal" family. I've had friends comment about their families and that they aren't normal enough to enjoy being together for any length of time. We are truly blessed to not have rifts between siblings or tension among ourselves. I know that Ma contributed to this because she was a peacemaker and discouraged conflict. Besides just getting along and liking each other, we can also fellowship on a spiritual level and that is truly unusual and a blessing beyond compare. Thank God for a beautiful heritage and that it continues to trickle down. I pray that my kids will someday "catch" it, too.

Friday, February 13, 2009

Bonita, Sounds like good advice to me! Hope you are a little more rested. Thanks for all the time you spent in La Junta. I know you wanted to be there, but I feel like you were there for all of us who couldn't be as well. Love, Karen
RE: Ma's reading...I was shocked when I learned how fast Mom read and absorbed! (being the challenged reader that I am) When she started reading through the New Testament she commented, "what is a 95 year old going to do with all this knowledge at this late date?" Then in Sept when she got the new TV, she became so intent on the campaign that she didn't read as many books but some. She could read the tape at bottom of the TV faster than I could hear what they were saying.

When Mom first was in NCC and didn't expect to live, she didn't think she would see another election. I asked one day, How will I know who to vote for if you're not here to tell me? She thought just a few seconds and then answered...I can tell you now... vote REPUBLICAN!

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

I loved the pictures, just being able to get them like this stuns me. I have no idea what I'm doing but I sure love watching what you guys decide to put on here. Who knows I might catch up one of these day's soon. Paula, I read that book that you started around...very thought provoking...I'll pass it on. I'm still amazed at the stuff Ma read..the amount and the content! The Shack?? As you've probably guessed by now I'm just gonna use this to check in whenever I want.

Love all yall!

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

This is so much fun! I'm going to love hearing about and from each of you! Kayci, thanks for the directions. I love that you are involved, too. I hope everyone has rested up since getting home. Can't wait to hear from you again. Love, karen

Hello, this is Kayci Ross. I am Karen Rogers' daughter and proud member of the Burr family. I am no pro at blogging, but I thought I might help you figure out how to post a picture for those of you that don't know. Here are the steps. It looks like a lot, but it really does go fast.

1. Click on the "posting" tab at the top of the page - directly under The Burr Connection.

2. Click on "Create"

I'm glad Patriece is feeling well after the weekend. Sonja will probably be helpful with posting pictures.

Please pass the blog information on to any other relatives not listed. These were the only emails I have in my address book.

Janet
Thanks for this connection blog. Karen asked for my email address.
I have two. Here they are for everyone to use. How do you put pictures on this blog? Anybody know how?

Love you all. So great to be with you. I heard that Patriece did real well with all the traveling and getting back for a wedding Sat. night, etc. It was a full weekend for her, but she did great. Thanks for all your prayers!

Paula

We are connected.

I hope everyone takes the opportunity to reconnect our lives. Ma would love knowing we stayed in touch.

I received a plant this morning from concerned friends. Resting in the center was a red bird. How precious a reminder of Ma's love for watching birds and painting them.

Please pass the blog on to your parents.
